It's time to return to an age of war and strife, old friends. Soulstorm is the second game in the Dawn Of War series, following closely on Dawn Of War 3 that launched in April 2019. Soulstorm is set between the events of Dawn of War 2 and Dystopian Wars. It introduces new races such as Eldar Guardians, Necrons with their Living Metal bodies, and Orks with their powerful Kultas close ranged ability. The game also introduces some reworked mechanics like changing how factions perform upgrades or lowering point costs for troops across the board to make it more accessible for newer players at all skill levels. The game takes place on eight unique battlefields all involving high risk, high reward combat. The chosen battlefields will offer different challenges and draws for each faction. Additionally, all factions now have both their original and new iconic hero units along with twelve new hero units called Warlords. A new weapon system allows for mounted units to be used on the battlefield as well as new unit abilities that change how units attack or affect the environment. Soulstorm is a standalone expansion but it does double duty, adding on all the maps from Dark Crusade and Blood Raven's Resurrection campaign for new skirmish maps with co-op play. For the purpose of this review, I will mostly focus on the expansion content of Soulstorm. There are many new features in Soulstorm that will directly impact how players play the game, but the most notable changes are to the points system. Each race has now been given their own unique point system that is primarily based on units with stat upgrades. This means for example that a player could get more units on the field, but they will have lower health or firepower that may not be able to stand up to a more expensive unit of power. Another notable change is the inclusion of special powers called Warlord abilities which can be unlocked by amassing certain modifiers in battle. Each Warlord ability has a cost and once the cost is paid the player can use that ability for a certain time period. There are many these abilities and they can be powerful but they also drain resources from the player which will need to balance stats, upgrades, and abilities to get the most out of their army. As stated before, Soulstorm adds eight maps in total including maps from previous games. The eight maps are Isstvan, Tarsis Ultra, Typhon Primaris, Blood Raven's Ressurection Campaign (Remix), Angel's Fall, Boneyard (Remix), Waaagh! Plains of Krazak & Chainium Marshes. Each one of these maps takes place in unique environments that will play out differently from each other. The new battlefields added into the Soulstorm variant include Tarsis Ultra, Typhon Primaris and Blood Raven's Ressurection Campaign and offer a variety of experiences. Of the eight maps available, two of them I found to be stand out options depending on the type of player you are. For players who enjoy objective based games, I recommend Angel's Fall and Chainium Marshes. Angel's Fall takes place on a desolate planet that has been consumed by a massive star. Each map is broken into two phases with one side fighting through an ambush phase where they must defend three capture points while the other side is attacking.
